Protestors Urge Crist To Veto House Abortion Bill

Dozens of pro-choice and Planned Parenthood supporters rallied in Miami Tuesday morning to urge Florida Governor Charlie Crist to veto a health bill that requires women seeking an abortion to pay for ultrasound exams, even if they don't want to see the image.

"I believe it is an invasion on a woman's right to choose, it is not intended to advance a health purpose but intended simply to try to get her to not have an abortion. I think that decision is hers and not the Florida legislatures," state Senator Dan Gelber told the gathering.

The only way a woman seeking an abortion could avoid the ultrasound requirement would be to provide a legal document that she had been raped or a victim of incest or domestic violence.

Planned Parenthood local coalitions organized rallies in West Palm Beach, Orlando, St. Petersburg, and Tallahassee last week.

The health bill passed the Florida House on the last day of the session after four hours of emotionally-charged debate. Democrats said it was little more than an attempt to persuade women they shouldn't have an abortion.

For Crist, it's the latest test that could determine his political future.

Gelber said last month Crist would be "crazy not to veto it." Crist is "pro-life" but never forcefully pushed legislation in that regard.

If Crist chooses to veto it, he could very well lose any of the moderate Republican support he currently has despite being an independent. Crist's candidacy for the Senate depends on him being able to peel off moderate support from both Democrats and Republicans.

Crist told the Tampa Tribune last week that the measure was "mean-spirited."

"To have your government impose on you, listen to a lecture, then on top of that, you have to pay for it?" Crist asked.

If Crist vetoes the bill, it is dead as the Republicans don't have enough votes to override a Crist veto.
